How to Make your Big Day full of Personality
What a TREAT to photograph this truly one-of-a-kind wedding in Redlands, CA. This was the epitome of a DIY wedding done oh-so-right! I'm always so excited to see what kind of details I get to photograph, and James and DJ's wedding did not disappoint.
From the custom, hand-made boutonnieres full of incredible detail and created (by the bride!) with each person in mind . . . to the beautiful bouquet lovingly made by the mother-of-the bride as a tribute to the bride's father . . . everything was perfection.
Any wedding that involves piecing together a Lego Batman heart to symbolize their unity, love and all around kick-ass-ness (is that a word?) and a superhero cake-topper (also made by the super-talented bride!) is bound to be awesome. And it was.
Not only did I come away inspired by the beauty and fun of the day, but it also got me thinking about how weddings are any opportunity to share your unique story and personality with those you love. So in that light, for those of you who are (or will be) planning a wedding, here are a couple of quick tips on how to infuse your wedding with personality:
1.) WHO SAYS BOUTONNIERES HAVE TO BE FLOWERS ? Try something different. Think about WHO will be wearing that boutonniere (or corsage). What do they do for a living? What are their hobbies? What's their favorite color/food/game/book? Where are they from? Who's their favorite super-hero/team/character? This not only makes your details more interesting and original, but it also shows the people closest to you that your wedding actually isn't all about you (*gasp*) and that you truly want them to know how special they are to you. Aw, warm fuzzies ;-)
2.) "UNITY" DOESN'T HAVE TO MEAN CANDLES AND SAND. Those are great, of course. But at some point those were also an original idea. So why not come up with a new way to show the world your unified front? Legos and Mini-Figures were a great fit for this couple, and I think everyone was delighted to see their take on the unity ceremony.
3.) CHOOSE A THEME. This can be anything from as simple as using your favorite colors to something more elaborate, like super-heroes. The important thing to remember is to have some way of tying it all together. In this case, everything visually worked really well together, because of the consistent use of turquoise and peach colors. DJ's an artist and graphic designer, so this came naturally to her. But if design isn't your thing, you may want to enlist the help of a Wedding Planner or even a friend with good design sense. Your photographer will thank you (and you might even end up on their blog)!!
I love how even the sunset coordinated with their colors! OK, nobody planned that, but it did work out quite nicely :-)
Anyone who knows James and DJ's love story, knows this day was a long time coming, but wow, was it worth it :-)
Oh, and I must add that they let me take some cupcakes home to my kiddos. Poor boys didn't get to taste them though, because hungry mommy devoured them in the car haha! They were delicious (and made by the bride, of course)!!
